金融街である City of London（シティ・オブ・ロンドン）のエリアに位置する、
ロンドンで最も古いマーケットの1つ、
Leadenhall Market（レドンホール・マーケット）
映画『ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石』のロケ地になった場所としても有名です。
今回はレドンホール・マーケットの魅力を夜景写真とともにお伝えいたします。

ハリー・ポッターのロケ地
The scene where Harry Potter and Hagrid go shopping for wands (and where Hagrid buys Hedwig as a late birthday gift for Harry) is one of the most memorable scenes in the first Harry Potter film…and it all happened outside Leadenhall Market.
And not only was Leadenhall Market used to represent the one area of London which secretly leads magical folk to Diagon Alley (in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone), Potterheads should be able to immediately recognize the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron at 42 Bull’s Head Passage (which is now an opticians office), as its blue door was used to film scenes in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as well.

『ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石』の最初の方の場面で、ホグワーツ魔法学校に通うのに必要なものを揃えるために、ハリーがハグリッドに連れられてお買い物に行くシーンでマーケットを歩いています。
ダイアゴン横丁に繋がるパブ「漏れ鍋」の入り口となった場所もあります。
42番の建物の隣です。
筆者は下調べをあまりせずにふらっと寄ったため、気付かず素通りしてしまいました。

映画の中ではほぼ「黒」に近い色ですが、実際は鮮やかな「青」色の建物のようです。
レドンホール・マーケットの歴史
Leadenhall Market has been a market site since Roman times when it was part of the site of Londinium's forum, the major market for the provincial capital.
In the fourteenth century it became a market place again when the lead roofed mansion which gave the area its name, became a market place for tenants of the Neville family. In 1409 the real life Dick Whittington, Lord Mayor of London, purchased the site and soon after it passed to the Corporation of London who have been running the market for almost six hundred years.
For a period it rivalled Smithfield as a meat and poultry market but in the nineteenth century the hide and meat market were incompatible with the financial city and the City Architect, Sir Horace Jones, was instructed to design a 'respectable arcade' for the poultry market.
The current ornate glass roofed building was constructed in 1881 at a cost of £99,000 though infrastructure works to the surrounding approaches cost a further £148,000. Jones had already designed the City markets at Smithfield and Leadenhall but was influenced at Leadenhall by Mengoni's Victor Emmanuel Galleria in Milan for the design of the new Leadenhall arcade. Its crooked ground plan however reflects the constraint of the medieval rights of way within which Jones had to work.
The market was extensively restored in 1991 and received a special mention in the Civic Trust Awards 1994. The Corporation of London maintains the market in its historic appearance.

ロンドンにある最も古いマーケットの1つということで、
その歴史は14世紀にまで遡ります。
火災や戦争などで何度か被害を受けましたが、修復が繰り返され、
1881年に数々の建築を手掛けたホレス・ジョーンズ氏によって
再設計されたことでその美しさから注目度を集めます。
現在の姿になったのは1991年とのこと。
筆者の生まれ年も同じく1991年なので、知った時は地味に親近感が湧きました(笑)
建物は重要文化建築物にも指定されています。
屋根の部分が特に美しいのですが、暗くなってからだと写真でお伝えするのが難しく、ぜひ実物を見ていただきたいです。
ライトに照らされた幻想的な雰囲気の夜間も素敵なのですが、
できれば昼間の太陽光がよく差し込む時間帯もぜひ見ていただきたいです。
レドンホール・マーケット基本情報
金融街の中心部に位置しており、
ランチタイム・仕事終わりの時間帯は周辺でお仕事をされている方がよく利用するため、行列ができるお店もあったそうです。
コロナが落ち着いて在宅勤務の率が減ると、
また以前のような活気にあふれた光景を目にすることができるのでしょうか。
やっぱりマーケットは多くの人で賑わっている方が雰囲気があっていいなと思います。
セントポール大聖堂（St. Paul's Cathedral）までは徒歩約15分、
ロンドンの街を見下ろすことのできるスカイガーデン（Sky Garden）は隣接しており、徒歩約 3分ほどの近さにあります。
周辺にある名所と合わせて観光を楽しみたいですね。
おわりに
この記事に掲載されている写真を見ていただくとわかる通り、
筆者が訪れたときは全然人がいなかったため、まるで異世界にワープしてしまったかのような気分で一人小雨が降る中を歩いていました。
それこそハリー・ポッターの世界に飛び込んだかのような。
ギリギリ 3度目のロックダウンが始まる前に訪れたのですが、
すでに以前からロンドンは Tier 4 だったため（実質的なローカルロックダウン状態です）、
訪れたのは平日の午後6時前くらいだったものの、お店はすべて閉まっていました。
このアーケードはお昼に訪れると雰囲気がガラッと変わり、
色鮮やかな装飾の美しさをより楽しむことができます。
ビジネス街に位置しており、休日は閉まっているお店もあるため、
安全に旅ができるようになったときは訪れるタイミングも検討に入れて旅行計画を練ってくださいね。
