マンチェスター市内の南西に位置する、
キャッスルフィールド（Castlefield）。
高層ビルが立ち並び、近年開発が進む Deansgate エリアのそばにありますが、
都心の喧騒を忘れるほど、ゆったりとした時間が流れています。
この記事では、キャッスルフィールド、
その周辺にあるおすすめの公園をご紹介いたします。
※この記事に掲載されている写真は、2021年2月下旬に撮影されたものです。マンチェスターで暮らしていた家からこの記事でご紹介している公園までは約2.2マイル（約3.5 km）ほどの距離でした。ジオラマモードで撮影したものも含まれますが、写真に加工はしておりません。
Saint John's Gardens
セント・ジョンズ・ガーデンズ（Saint John's Gardens）は
キャッスルフィールド（Castlefield）とスピニングフィールズ（Spinningfields）エリアの間に位置している公園です。
住宅街に囲まれており、背景にビルもたくさん見えますが、
公園内は静かで落ち着いた時間が流れています。
“The Gardens were formerly the site of St. John's Church and Graveyard which was demolished in 1931. A monument to the church and the 22,000 people buried in its grounds stands in the middle of the gardens where the original entrance of St. John's Church lay.”

もともとは St. John's Church という教会がこの場所に建てられていたようですが、1931年に取り壊され、
1932年から現在まで市民の公園として利用されています。
Mamucium/Mancunium

Castlefield Urban Heritage Park は
セント・ジョンズ・ガーデンズ（Saint John's Gardens）から
南へ徒歩約 4分程に位置する公園です。
公園と言っても、「遺跡が残っている広場」という感じで、
花と緑にあふれた、のんびりとくつろげるような場所とは少し違います…
Castlefield Urban Heritage Park を出て西に向かいます。

Castlefield Urban Heritage Park のそばには、
Reconstruction of Mamucium Roman Fort Wall があります。

“The Romans built their first fort at Manchester in 79 AD on a carefully chosen strategic site. Built on a sandstone outcrop it was close by a crossing point on the River Medlock, near to where it meets the River Irwell.
They called the fort ‘Mamucium’, which either means ‘breast shaped hill’ or comes from the Celtic name for the Medlock.”

“The Roman fort of Mamucium was established by 78 AD at a site overlooking the confluence of the rivers Irwell and Medlock. This was a timber fort with earthen ramparts for an auxiliary cohort of infantry of around 500 men.”
“The fort went through several phase of rebuilding and around 160 AD was extended on one side to incorporate granaries. In around 200 AD it was refaced in stone when the Emperor Severus came to the north of England to subdue a revolt.”
“The fort was eventually abandoned around the end of the 4th century AD. Following excavations by the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit in 1980, the north gate was reconstructed in 1984. This incorporates some of the original plinth stones from the Roman gate.”

こちらはそこまで古い建物…という雰囲気はしなかったのですが、
なるほど、1984年に修復されていたようですね。
ちなみに…（写真上）後方に写っているのはヒルトンホテル（Hilton Manchester Deansgate）です。宿泊しなくても、レストランのあるフロアまでは登ることができます。
そこから見る夜景は絶景とのこと！（ハウスメイトだったErikaから聞いた話です。私は残念ながら訪れたことはありませんが、いつか行ってみたいです…）
そのまま西へ歩みを進めると、
Castlefield Bowl という野外ライブなどが行われる開催地に辿り着きます。
Castlefield Bowl
“The Castlefield Bowl (originally the Castlefield Events Arena and formerly the Castlefield Arena) is an outdoor events pavilion in the inner city conservation area of Castlefield in Manchester in North West England. The arena is often used for food festivals and music gigs.”

ステージも何もなければ想像できないですよね…(笑)

私がお散歩した日はお天気も良かったため、まばらに人が座っていました。
運河にはたくさんのナロウボート(Narrowboat) がとまっていました。
それぞれカラフルな模様がペイントされていて、
ひとつひとつゆっくりと見ていくだけでも楽しいですね。
キャッスルフィールド（Castlefield）のエリア内、
Merchant's Bridge の近くにもナロウボートがたくさん列をなして止まっています。

おわりに
筆者はYMSビザで2年間マンチェスターに滞在していた頃は、
Salford というエリアで生活していました。
（Salford Quays 近くのおしゃれなエリアではなく、どことなく寂れた雰囲気が漂う Salford Shopping Centre のそばです。全然都会ではありませんが、わりと便利で気に入っていました。）
