マンチェスター大学の敷地内にあるウィットワース美術館の3つの魅力

イギリスはたいていどの都市にも、いくつかの美術館・博物館があります。

有難いことにそのほとんどが無料で、館内撮影OKです。

マンチェスターにもたくさんの美術館・博物館がありますが、今回はその中でも特にお気に入りのウィットワース美術館についてご紹介させていただきます。

写真はすべて2019年4月11日に訪れた際に撮影したものです。

ウィットワース美術館の基本情報

ウィットワース美術館は1889年にマンチェスター市民の娯楽、地元の織物産業の活性化、学生・芸術家などの指導を目的に設立されました。

所蔵芸術作品は6万点にものぼります。

イギリスの水彩画家のコレクションで有名ですが、他にもコンテンポラリーアート、印刷美術、彫刻、壁紙作品、テキスタイルなどの作品を鑑賞することができます。

※2020年6月15日現在、Covid-19のためウィットワース美術館は閉館となっております。

★ウィットワース美術館は、市街中心部の南に位置しています。

市内から徒歩で行くには少し遠いです。（徒歩約30 ～ 35分）

Piccadilly Gardensからバスに乗る場合はManchester Airport行きの42, 43, 142、もしくはChorlton行きの111で約15分乗車、Royal infirmary駅で下車後、徒歩約2分で到着します。

１常設展が素晴らしい

美しいコレクションがたくさんありますが、中でも下記2つはこの美術館特有だと思います。

かわいい壁紙（Wallpaper collections）

❝Wallpaper collections are relatively rare

The Whitworth's is made up of more than 5,000 examples, the bulk of which were given to the gallery in 1967 by The Wall Paper Manufacturers Ltd., which had controlled most of the UK wallpaper industry since 1899.❞

これを読んでさらにこの美術館のことが好きになりました。

かわいいテキスタイル（Textile Collection）

❝Our textile holdings are acknowledged as internationally important and their presence here reflect both Manchester’s significance in the history of world textiles and the gallery’s early industrial links. Today, as evidence of the global trade in textiles that built the city’s wealth and reputation during the Industrial Revolution, the Whitworth is home to around 20,000 dress and textile objects from across the world.❞

他にも素晴らしいコレクションがたくさんあります。

２特別展・イベントが頻繁に開催される

常設展も見どころ盛りだくさんなのですが、特別展も頻繁に開催されます。

子供から大人まで楽しめるイベントが多く、何度訪れても新鮮な気持ちを味わえます。

私が訪れたときは、たまたまコンサートが行われていました。

夜遅くまで（21:00まで）空いている木曜日を狙って行ったのですが、

イベントのことは知らなかったので、すごくラッキーでした！

クラシック音楽を聴きながらの美術鑑賞。

なんとも贅沢な時間でした。

３ウィットワース公園内にあり、芸術と自然を一度に楽しめる

ウィットワース美術館はウィットワース公園内に位置しています。

美術館には入り口が2か所あり、正面のOxford Road、もしくは公園からも入ることができます。

ウィットワース美術館によるBlack Lives Matterへの取り組み

ウィットワース美術館もBlack Lives Matterのムーブメントをサポートする声明を公式㏋で発表しています。

❝Deeds not words

As civic and public art institutions founded in the nineteenth century we need to do this with care and consideration. Our roots, and those of our city, are entangled with colonialism and capitalism, our prosperity built on manufacture, trade and empire - and this resonates today. We understand that it is critical to acknowledge and address structural racism, and show solidarity with local and global communities that are subject to racial inequality and discrimination. Yet we also know that actions speak louder than words - we must make practical and tangible contributions to change.❞

❝Getting together and getting things done

Museums have a great convening power, to bring people together to share, exchange and create positive forms of culture and connecting, but beyond this we also need action. This work is wider-ranging but as a whole starts to build a head of steam that does more than create cultural capital for institutions. It starts to shift policy and practice in the wider world.
